How a shower or bath can become a simple healthy-skin ritual after 50...
I’m very good at finding time for the things that need doing.
Less good, sometimes, at finding time for me.
And when I realise I’ve put myself at the bottom of the list again, I can feel disappointed in myself. I wonder why I don’t always give myself the same time, love and care that I so readily give elsewhere.
Perhaps you recognise that.
You think, “I really need to start looking after myself.” Then life gets busy, somebody needs something, there are jobs to do and somehow you are the easiest thing to drop.
I don’t think the answer is another enormous self-care routine.
I certainly don’t need another list of things I’m supposed to be doing properly.
Instead, I’m becoming much more interested in the little moments of care that already exist in an ordinary day.
Like having a shower.
Or, when there’s time, taking a bath.
Most mornings, I shower because it is convenient. I am not naturally a morning person and there is no leisurely ten-step ritual happening before I start my day. I want to wake up, feel fresh and get moving. A bright citrus scent helps rather nicely.
A bath is different.
I love a bath, but I never want to rush one. If I’m going to have one, I want to enjoy it properly. There will usually be a drink, a candle, a face mask and something to read. If I’m aching after exercise, I might add magnesium or Epsom salts too.
It’s less about getting clean and more about allowing myself to stop.
Never underestimate the power of a bath.
The shower that starts my day and the bath that sometimes ends it are very different, but both are opportunities to look after my skin.
And after 50, what we wash our skin with, how hot the water is and how our skin feels afterwards can matter more than they once did.
This isn’t about turning your shower into another job.
It’s about making something you already do work a little better for the skin you have now.

We talk a great deal about the changes we notice in the skin on our faces, but the skin on our bodies changes too.
As we get older, skin commonly produces less of its natural oil and may hold on to moisture less effectively. Hormonal changes around menopause can add to that feeling of dryness.
Skin that once tolerated almost any soap, shower gel or very hot bath may begin to feel tight, itchy or less comfortable.
That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with your skin.
Nor does it mean you need an elaborate shelf of body products.
It may simply need a little more gentleness than it did before.
Last week, I wrote about exfoliation, deodorant and moisturising as parts of a healthy body-care routine. But good body care begins one step earlier, with cleansing.
If the product we use in the shower leaves our skin feeling stripped, the richest moisturiser afterwards has more work to do.
So there is one very simple question worth asking when you step out of the shower:
How does my skin feel?
Clean skin should still feel comfortable.

For years, many of us were taught to associate lots of foam and that squeaky finish with being properly clean.
Yet tight skin after washing isn’t necessarily a sign that your cleanser has done a particularly good job. It can be a sign that it has removed more of the skin’s protective oils than your skin would have liked.
The aim is to remove sweat, everyday dirt and excess oil without disrupting the skin’s natural barrier unnecessarily.
That’s why I look for body cleansers that combine effective cleansing with ingredients that help skin retain moisture.
Tropic’s upgraded Body Cleansers use gentle glycolipid cleansers alongside plant-derived humectants, aloe vera juice and kiwi extract. The humectants help attract and retain moisture, while the cleansers are designed to purify without leaving skin feeling tight or stripped.
They are pH-balanced and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.
There are four different scent blends too, which is where something functional can become something you actually enjoy using.
I’m a citrus girl, so my favourites are Wild Mango & Blood Orange and Lime Zest & Pineapple.
Wild Mango & Blood Orange is tropical and juicy, with wild mango, guava and blood orange essential oil.
Lime Zest & Pineapple combines mint leaf and lime essential oils with sweet pineapple. I find that one a little sweeter, but it still has the brightness I like in the morning.
If citrus isn’t your thing, White Jasmine & Monoï is soft, floral and comforting, while Eucalyptus & Black Pepperleaf has a clean, woody scent with a warmer, subtly invigorating finish.
Scent is personal.
The best one isn’t the fragrance somebody tells you is fashionable. It’s the one that makes your shower feel more like your shower.

There’s a version of self-care online that seems to require an empty diary, a beautiful bathroom and at least twelve coordinated products.
My mornings do not look like that.
And I suspect yours might not either.
If you’ve already spent years fitting yourself around everybody and everything else, the last thing I want to give you is another complicated routine that leaves you thinking, “I should be doing that too.”
For me, a realistic morning shower is very simple:
1. Keep the water comfortably warm rather than fiercely hot.
2. Use a gentle cleanser with a scent I enjoy.
3. Rinse well and pat my skin dry rather than rubbing vigorously.
4. Follow with body moisturiser where and when my skin needs it.
That is enough.
A ritual doesn’t have to be long to be worthwhile.
Sometimes it’s simply the difference between reaching automatically for whatever is nearest and choosing something that leaves your skin feeling comfortable and gives you a few minutes you actually enjoy.
Very hot water can feel wonderful, particularly when your body is stiff or aching, but it may make dry or sensitive skin feel worse.
Turning the temperature down slightly and keeping showers reasonably brief can be kinder to skin that is becoming drier.
You don’t need to stand there with a stopwatch.
Just notice how your skin feels afterwards.
That little bit of noticing is often a very good place to start.
Some people enjoy a bottled body cleanser. Others prefer the simplicity of a solid bar, particularly for travel or when they are trying to reduce packaging.
Tropic’s Cleansing Body Pebbles are concentrated solid body cleansers made with shea butter, golden jojoba oil and coconut-derived cleansers.
Unlike traditional soaps made with harsh lye, they are SLS- and ALS-free and use gentle botanical cleansers to create a creamy lather while maintaining a skin-friendly pH.
They can be used on the hands and body and also double as a shampoo bar, which makes them particularly useful for travel.
Each Pebble comes in a recyclable cardboard box, with no plastic bottle involved.
My choices are, perhaps predictably, Citrus and Zesty Mojito.
The Pebble can be lathered directly with water or placed inside the natural sisal Pebble Pouch. The pouch stores it, helps it dry between uses and doubles as an exfoliating mitt when you want a little more texture.
If your skin is dry, sensitive or reactive, gentle does not mean ineffective.
It simply means choosing cleansing ingredients and a format that respect how your skin feels now.
And, just as importantly, you don’t need both formats because somebody tells you that you should.
Choose the one that works for you.

A shower is often practical.
A bath, for me, is rarely just practical.
It marks a change of pace.
It’s the point when I stop trying to fit in one more job and allow the day to end.
The drink, candle, face mask and something to read are not essential bath instructions.
They’re simply the details I enjoy. They tell my brain I’m no longer rushing.
If my body is aching after Reformer Pilates or other exercise, warm water and a quiet half-hour can feel especially welcome. I may add magnesium or Epsom salts because I enjoy them, but sometimes comfort is reason enough.
Tropic’s Luxury Bath Foams fit naturally into that slower evening ritual.
Both contain aloe vera juice, macadamia oil and gentle coconut-derived cleansers. The macadamia oil disperses into the water to help soften and hydrate the skin without leaving a greasy residue, while the formulas create bubbles without SLS or ALS.
Tahitian Vanilla & Coconut is sweet and indulgent.
So Sleepy is the one I particularly love before bed. It contains a blend of seven premium distilled essential oils, and Tropic states that the blend is clinically backed to improve sleep quality.
I would never suggest that one bath product can fix every sleep problem. Good sleep has many influences.
But scent, warmth and a repeated wind-down routine can become useful signals that the active part of the day is over.
Pour the Bath Foam under running water and move your hands through the water to help create the bubbles.
Then comes the bit I think matters most.
Give yourself enough time to enjoy them.

There is no correct way to have a restorative bath.
You do not need to copy the perfectly styled version on social media.
Choose two or three details you genuinely enjoy:
· A drink you look forward to
· A candle or softer bathroom lighting
· A face mask or eye mask
· A book or magazine
· Music, a podcast or complete quiet
· Fresh sleepwear and a towel waiting afterwards
Or choose none of them.
The value isn’t in how photogenic your bathroom looks.
It’s in giving yourself a little pocket of time that belongs to you.
That matters to me because I know how easily looking after ourselves can become another standard we think we’re failing to meet.
A quick shower can be caring.
A long bath can be caring.
On a difficult day, simply washing your face and body can be enough.
Healthy skin isn’t created by doing everything perfectly. It is supported by small choices made consistently, including the cleanser you use every day and the way you respond when your skin tells you it needs something gentler.
What is the best body wash for dry skin after 50?
Look for a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that removes everyday dirt and sweat without leaving skin feeling tight. Moisture-supporting ingredients such as humectants, aloe vera and nourishing oils can help skin feel more comfortable.
The best formula for you will also depend on your fragrance preferences and individual sensitivities.
Should I shower every day if I have dry skin?
Many people shower daily without difficulty, but how you shower matters.
Very hot water, long showers and harsh cleansers may make dryness worse. Try comfortably warm water, a gentle cleanser and moisturiser afterwards if your skin needs it.
If dryness, itching or irritation persists, speak to a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist.
Are baths bad for dry skin?
Not necessarily.
Long baths in very hot water may leave some skin feeling drier, but a comfortably warm bath with a gentle formula can still be enjoyable.
Notice how your own skin responds, avoid products that irritate it and moisturise afterwards if helpful.
Is a Body Pebble the same as soap?
Tropic’s Cleansing Body Pebbles are solid cleansers, but they are not made like traditional lye-based soaps.
They use coconut-derived botanical cleansers and are formulated without SLS or ALS to create a creamy, non-stripping lather at a skin-friendly pH.
Can fragrance irritate sensitive skin?
Some people with sensitive or reactive skin find fragranced products irritating, even when the scent ingredients are naturally derived.
“Natural” does not automatically mean suitable for everybody.
Patch testing and paying attention to your own skin are sensible, and you should stop using anything that causes irritation.

The moments that start and end our days do not need to be impressive.
My morning shower is quick, practical and usually citrus-scented.
My ideal evening bath is slow, warm and very definitely not to be rushed.
Both can support healthy, comfortable skin.
But I think they can do something else too.
They can be small reminders that looking after ourselves does not have to wait until everybody else has been looked after, the jobs are finished and we have somehow earned the right to stop.
I’m still learning that.
When I realise I’ve put myself last again, I can be disappointed in myself. But perhaps the answer isn’t to give myself another thing to feel guilty about.
Perhaps it’s simply to notice and make a different small choice next time.
Use the cleanser that makes your changing skin feel comfortable.
Turn the water down a little if your skin prefers it.
Take the quick shower when that is what works for you.
And when you have the opportunity for the long bath with the candle, the book, the face mask and absolutely no intention of rushing it, take that too.
You are allowed time for yourself without having to earn it first.
And looking after yourself doesn’t have to mean becoming a different woman or getting everything right.
Sometimes it can simply mean giving the woman you already are a little more care.
If your skin has started to feel drier, tighter or more sensitive and you’re unsure what would work for you, send me a message. Tell me what your skin is doing and what you actually want from your routine.
I’ll listen before I recommend.
