Bodycare after 50: Why the skin on your body deserves care too
Reading time: 8β10 minutes
There comes a point when many of us notice our skin isn't quite the same as it used to be.
Perhaps your legs always seem dry, no matter how much moisturiser you apply.
Maybe the skin on your arms feels rougher than it once did.
Or perhaps you've started noticing that your body just doesn't feel as comfortable in its own skin as it used to.
As women, we often spend years looking after everyone else before ourselves. We make sure the family is fed, everyone else's appointments are organised, the washing gets done, work deadlines are met and birthdays are remembered.
Somewhere along the way, our own needs quietly slip down the list.
Looking after the skin on our body often becomes one of those things we'll "do when we get time."
The trouble is, that time rarely appears.
Over the last couple of years, I've realised something.
Looking after my body isn't about trying to make it look younger.
It's about appreciating everything it does for me.
It's carried me through 54 years of life.
It deserves a little kindness in return.
And perhaps...so do I.
1. Why does the skin on our body change after 50?
2. Healthy skin, not perfect skin.
3. Why Body Care matters.
4. Why exfoliation is the step so many women miss.
5. One product I've loved for years.
6. When your skin needs something a little more targeted.
7. Small habits really do make the biggest difference.
8. Why moisturising is about so much more than just soft skin.
9. Five minutes that belong just to me.
10. When your skin needs a little extra comfort.
11. Let's talk underarm care.
12. Healthy skin starts long before skin care.
13. Frequently asked questions.
One of the questions I'm asked most often is,
"Why has my skin suddenly become so dry?"
The truth is, it isn't sudden at all.
Our skin changes gradually as we get older, particularly during and after menopause.
It naturally produces less oil than it once did, making it easier for moisture to escape.
The process of shedding old skin cells also slows down, which can leave skin feeling rougher, duller and less smooth than it used to.
You may notice it on your shins first.
Or your elbows.
Perhaps the backs of your arms.
For some women it's their hands.
For others it's all over.
None of this means there's anything wrong with your skin.
It simply means your skin has different needs now than it did twenty years ago.
And just as we've adapted to so many other changes throughout our lives, our skincare can evolve too.
Not with complicated routines.
Not with cupboards full of products.
Just with a few thoughtful habits that help our skin stay healthy, comfortable and well cared for.

Did you know?
The skin on your body contains fewer oil glands than the skin on your face, especially on your arms and legs. That's one reason these areas often become drier as we get older.
One of the things I dislike most about the beauty industry is the message that we're somehow supposed to fight ageing.
Personally, that's never been my goal.
I don't want perfect skin.
I don't expect perfect skin.
What I do want is healthy skin.
Skin that feels comfortable.
Skin that isn't itchy because it's dry.
Skin that feels soft after I've moisturised it.
Skin that I'm happy to live in.
Healthy skin isn't about pretending we're thirty.
It's about caring for the skin we're in today.
To me, that's a much kinder conversation.

When people think about skincare, they usually think about their face.
Cleansers.
Serums.
Moisturisers.
SPF.
But our body is skin too.
It deserves the same care and attention.
Body care doesn't have to be complicated.
In fact, I think the simpler it is, the more likely we are to keep doing it.
For me, it comes down to three things.
Keeping skin gently exfoliated.
Keeping it well moisturised.
And choosing products that make those few minutes feel like a pleasure rather than another job on the to-do list.
Those small rituals soon become habits.
And habits are what make the biggest difference over time.
If I'm honest, exfoliating isn't something many of us were ever taught about.
We know we should wash.
We might moisturise.
But exfoliate?
That's often the missing piece.
As we get older, dead skin cells naturally build up on the surface of our skin because the renewal process slows down.
That layer of dry skin can make our body feel rough, and it can stop moisturisers reaching the fresh skin underneath where they're needed most.
A gentle exfoliator removes those dead skin cells, leaving your skin feeling softer and allowing your moisturiser to absorb much more effectively.
The important word here is gentle.
Our skin becomes more delicate with age.
Body care should feel nurturing.
Not harsh.
Not abrasive.
Just kind.

One of the things I love most about Tropic is that every product has a story.
Long before Tropic became the company it is today, Body Smooth was the very first product Susie Ma created in her mum's kitchen, inspired by her grandmother's homemade body scrub recipe. I think that's rather lovely because it reminds us that great skincare doesn't have to start in a laboratory, it starts with wanting to care for skin well.
Body Smooth is the product I reach for when my skin is starting to feel a little dry or rough. The natural exfoliating grains gently buff away dull, dry skin while nourishing oils, including jojoba and macadamia, leave my skin feeling soft and comfortable rather than stripped. The fresh citrus notes of Australian lemon myrtle make it feel uplifting too, turning a simple shower into a moment to enjoy.
I usually use it once or twice a week, paying particular attention to my elbows, knees and lower legs where my skin tends to be driest.
It only takes a few extra minutes, but it makes such a difference to how my skin feels afterwards.

Natalie's Tip...
If your body moisturiser never seems to make much difference, try exfoliating first.
Removing that layer of dry, dead skin helps your moisturiser absorb more effectively, so your skin gets the full benefit.
Sometimes dry skin isn't the whole story.
Perhaps you've noticed tiny bumps on the backs of your arms.
Maybe your thighs always feel a little rough.
Or perhaps you've been faithfully moisturising but your skin still doesn't feel as smooth as you'd like.
If that's you, Super Smooth is well worth looking at.
Instead of using exfoliating grains, it combines fruit enzymes with plant AHAs to gently loosen the dead skin cells that contribute to rough, uneven skin texture. It's a much gentler approach than traditional scrubs and is designed specifically for skin that needs a little extra help.
In Tropic's user trial, participants experienced an average 58% reduction in rough skin after 28 days of use, which shows what gentle, consistent care can achieve.
That's something I've learnt in so many areas of life.
Consistency nearly always wins over quick fixes.
I've become a big believer that healthy skin isn't built by one miracle product.
It's built by small habits.
The things we do regularly.
Drinking enough water.
Eating foods that nourish us.
Moving our bodies.
Getting enough sleep.
And taking a few minutes to care for our skin.
None of those things are dramatic on their own.
But together they all play a part.
I think that's one of the nicest things about getting older.
I've stopped looking for perfection.
Instead, I look for routines that are realistic, enjoyable and easy to stick with.
Because they're the ones that become part of everyday life.

People often think of body moisturiser as something we use when our skin starts itching in winter.
But moisturising is about so much more than that.
As we get older, our skin naturally loses moisture more easily, so replacing that moisture helps keep it comfortable, supple and supported all year round.
For me, moisturising isn't really about how my skin looks.
It's about how it feels.
Comfortable skin makes me feel more comfortable in myself.
And that brings me to one of my favourite parts of the day.

I've used Body Love for years because my skin has always been incredibly dry.
But over the last eighteen months, it's become something much more than my daily body moisturiser.
Every morning, after my shower, I apply my HRT gel.(!)
Then I reach for my tube of Body Love.
To me, they're two simple ways of looking after my body.
I start with my feet and toes.
Then slowly work my way up my legs, carefully avoiding where I've applied my HRT.
Next comes my tummy, my dΓ©colletage and finally my arms.
It's not rushed.
It's not another job on my list.
It's simply five quiet minutes before the day begins.
Five minutes where nobody needs anything from me.
The fresh citrus fragrance is one of my favourite things about it.
It's Tropic's signature scent, and the moment I open the lid of the tube it makes me smile.
It's become part of how I wake up.
Part of how I begin the day with intention instead of rushing headlong into everything that needs doing.
Body Love contains nourishing ingredients including shea butter and vitamin E to help soften and care for dry skin, making it a lovely everyday moisturiser for skin that needs a little extra nourishment.
Looking back, I don't think those five minutes are really about moisturising anymore.
They're about reminding myself that I matter too.

As much as I love Body Love as my everyday body moisturiser, there are times when my skin asks for something a little richer.
Perhaps it's the middle of winter.
Perhaps I've spent the day out in the garden.
Perhaps the central heating has been on for weeks.
Or maybe my skin just feels particularly dry that week.
That's when I reach for Whipped Body Velvet.
Think of it as comfort food for your skin.
Rich and luxurious without feeling greasy, it melts beautifully into the skin and leaves it feeling deeply nourished. With shea butter, cocoa butter, baobab oil and the warm scent of Madagascan vanilla, it's the sort of product that naturally encourages you to slow down and enjoy the experience rather than rushing through it.
I tend to use it in the evenings when I have a little more time.
It's a lovely way to end the day, especially during the colder months when skin often needs a little extra care.

Underarm care probably isn't something many of us spend much time thinking about.
Most of us simply buy the same product we've always used.
But, just like the skin on our face and body, the delicate skin under our arms changes over time too.
As I've become more conscious about the products I use every day, I've started paying much more attention to what I'm putting on my skin.
That's one of the reasons I enjoy using Feel Fresh.
It combines effective antiperspirant protection with ingredients chosen to care for the skin too, including bentonite clay, bisabolol and gingergrass extract. Tropic explains that it contains aluminium chlorohydrate because it is an effective and well-researched antiperspirant ingredient for reducing perspiration.
I'm also really looking forward to Tropic's new refillable deodrant, launching later this month.
It's exactly the sort of thoughtful innovation I love to see, helping us reduce waste without compromising on products we genuinely enjoy using.

If you've followed me for a while, you'll know I don't believe healthy skin comes from one miracle product.
I think it comes from lots of little choices that support our wellbeing every single day.
Over the last eighteen months, I've made a conscious effort to look after myself better.
Not because I wanted to become someone different.
Because I wanted to feel healthier.
I've worked on drinking more water.
Eating more nourishing foods.
Finding movement that I genuinely enjoy. (Reformer Pilates has become one of my favourite discoveries!)
I've tried to improve my sleep.
To slow down occasionally.
To stop feeling guilty for taking five minutes for myself.
And somewhere along the way I realised something.
Those little choices weren't selfish.
They were necessary.
Because when we feel better, we often look better too.
Not because we're chasing perfection.
Because we're looking after ourselves as a whole.
I honestly believe my skin reflects those small daily choices just as much as it reflects the skincare I use.
That's why I don't think healthy skin begins and ends with moisturiser.
It's part of a much bigger picture.
A gentle reminder
Looking after yourself doesn't have to mean changing your whole life overnight.
Sometimes it's simply...
Drinking another glass of water.
Going to bed half an hour earlier.
Spending five peaceful minutes moisturising after your shower.
Going for a walk.
Choosing foods that nourish your body.
Remembering that you matter too.
Little things. Done consistently. They really do add up.
How often should I exfoliate my body?
For most people, once or twice a week is enough. Gentle exfoliation helps remove the build-up of dead skin cells without overworking the skin, leaving it feeling softer and helping your body moisturiser absorb more effectively.
Should I moisturise my body every day?
If your skin feels dry or uncomfortable, daily moisturising can make a real difference. As we get older, our skin naturally loses moisture more easily, so regular hydration helps keep it feeling soft, comfortable and supported.
Why is my skin so dry after menopause?
Hormonal changes during and after menopause can reduce your skin's natural oil production, making it easier for moisture to escape. That's why many women notice their skin becoming drier than it used to be.
Do I really need a separate body care routine?
Your body has different needs to your face. The skin on areas such as your legs and arms contains fewer oil glands, so using products designed to nourish and support body skin can help keep it healthy and comfortable.
If there's one thing I'd love you to take away from this article, it's this.
Looking after your body isn't about vanity.
It isn't about trying to turn back the clock.
It's about gratitude.
Our bodies carry us through every single day.
They deserve kindness.
For me, that kindness starts each morning after my shower.
A few quiet minutes.
My Body Love.
The fresh citrus fragrance that makes me smile before the day begins.
Those five minutes remind me that looking after myself isn't something I should feel guilty about.
It's one of the simplest ways I can say thank you to the body that's carried me through every stage of my life.
If this article encourages you to find your own little ritual, whether that's moisturising after your shower, drinking another glass of water or simply taking five minutes for yourself, then I hope you'll discover what I have.
Healthy skin isn't really the destination.
Feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin is.
