Body Sun Protection: Why It Matters, What to Use, and How to Look After Your Skin in the Sun

We talk a lot about facial SPF in the skincare world, and rightly so.

But here's the thing: the skin on your body needs just as much protection from the sun as the skin on your face.

Your arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs , they're all exposed to UV rays throughout the summer, and yet body sun protection is something a lot of us don't think about until we're already a bit pink. Sound familiar?

I wanted to write this guide because I think body suncare deserves its own moment. It's not just about avoiding sunburn (although that matters too). It's about looking after your skin long-term, keeping it healthy, and actually enjoying the sun without worrying.

I'll be covering facial sun protection in a separate post next week, so today is all about your body. Let's get into it.

11. Getting started

1. Why do we need to protect our body from the sun?

This is one of those things that sounds obvious, but when you understand what's actually happening beneath the surface, it really hits home.

UV radiation from the sun damages the DNA in our skin cells. Over time, that damage accumulates, even if you never visibly burn.

It leads to premature ageing, loss of elasticity, hyperpigmentation, and in more serious cases, increases the risk of skin cancer.

The skin on our body is often exposed for longer periods than our face, especially in summer. Think about sitting in the garden, walking on the beach, or even just wearing a vest top on a warm day. That's hours of UV exposure that we don't always think about.

And here's something that surprises a lot of people: UV rays are present all year round, not just on sunny days. Even on overcast days, up to 80% of UV rays can penetrate cloud cover.

So while summer is when we're most exposed, sun awareness really is a year-round thing.

2. UVA vs UVB: What are we actually protecting against?

You've probably seen the terms UVA and UVB on sunscreen packaging, but what do they actually mean?

UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn. They affect the outer layer of your skin and are the primary cause of reddening and burning. They're strongest between 10am and 4pm and are more intense in summer.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin. They don't cause the same visible burning, but they're responsible for premature ageing, wrinkles, and loss of firmness. UVA rays are present at a consistent level throughout the day and throughout the year, and they can even pass through glass.

This is why you want a broad-spectrum sunscreen, one that protects against both UVA and UVB. SPF alone only measures UVB protection, so always look for that broad-spectrum label.

Both of Tropic's body sun products offer broad-spectrum protection, which means you're covered on both fronts.

3. Chemical vs Mineral SPF: What's the difference?

This is a question I get asked a lot, and it's a really good one.

Chemical SPFs absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, which is then released from the skin. They tend to be lightweight and invisible on the skin. Tropic's Great Barrier Sun Lotion uses a combination of mineral and chemical filters for effective, comfortable protection.

Mineral SPFs (also called physical SPFs) sit on top of the skin and physically deflect UV rays. They use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. They're often recommended for sensitive skin because they're less likely to cause irritation. Tropic's

Skin Shade Sun Cream is 100% mineral, making it a brilliant choice for anyone with reactive or sensitive skin.

Neither approach is "better" , it really comes down to your skin type and your preference.

The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually enjoy wearing and re-apply consistently

4. How much SPF should you use on your body?

This is where most of us go wrong. We don't use enough.

The general guidance is about two tablespoons (roughly 35ml) for your entire body.

That's a lot more than most people think. If you're only using a thin layer, you're not getting the full SPF protection stated on the bottle.

For reference:

·         SPF 30 can protect for up to 300 minutes (about 5 hours) in theory

·         SPF 50 extends that to around 500 minutes (about 8 hours)

But those numbers assume you've applied the correct amount and aren't sweating, swimming, or towelling off. In reality, reapplication is essential.

How Often Should You Re-apply?

Every two hours. That's the golden rule.

And you should reapply immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying, even if the product is water-resistant. Water-resistant doesn't mean waterproof , it means the product maintains its SPF level for a certain amount of time in water, but it still needs topping up.

It's also worth applying your sunscreen 15-20 minutes before you go outside, so it has time to settle and start working.

5. Introducing Great Barrier Sun Lotion

If you're looking for a sun lotion that feels gorgeous on the skin and gives you reliable, broad-spectrum protection, Great Barrier is a beautiful choice.

Great Barrier Sun Lotion (£28, 200ml/100ml)

This is Tropic's go-to body sun lotion for holidays, beach days, and long days in the sun. Available in SPF 30 and SPF 50, it uses a combination of mineral and chemical filters to defend against both UVA and UVB rays.

What I love about it:

·         Water-resistant , so it stays put when you're swimming or sweating

·         Non-greasy formula , it sinks in easily and leaves an invisible finish with no chalkiness

·         Green algae extract , protects skin from pollution and environmental aggressors

·         Coconut extracts and vitamin E , nourish and soothe while you're in the sun

·         Aloe vera and hyaluronic acid , keep skin hydrated even in the heat

·         Vanilla ice cream scent , honestly, it smells absolutely gorgeous

·         Reef-safe , certified with the Protect Land + Sea logo

·         Suitable for all skin tones , no white cast

One verified customer said: "Love this sun cream. Plant-based and made in the UK, it rubs in well and smells lovely. Highly recommended!"

Great Barrier is perfect for anyone who wants a reliable, everyday body SPF that feels lovely to wear and does its job brilliantly.

6. Introducing Skin Shade Sun Cream

If you have sensitive, reactive, or eczema-prone skin, Skin Shade is the one to know about.

Skin Shade Sun Cream (£28, 100ml/200ml)

This is Tropic's 100% mineral sun cream, using zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to physically deflect UV rays rather than absorbing them. Available in SPF 30 and SPF 50.

What makes it special:

·         100% mineral protection , gentle on even the most delicate skin

·         Fragrance-free , no added scent, so nothing to irritate sensitive skin

·         Non-greasy and fast-absorbing , no sticky, heavy feeling

·         Sweat-resistant and long-lasting , stays put through activity

·         Kahai and roucou oils , nourish with essential omegas

·         Kakadu, Illawarra, and Burdekin plum extracts , defend against pollution and environmental stressors

·         Reef-safe , certified with the Protect Land + Sea logo

One customer with severe rosacea shared: "Brilliant sunscreen! I have severe rosacea flare-ups and this works perfectly without reactions."

If your skin tends to react to chemical sunscreens, or if you just prefer a mineral formula, Skin Shade is a gorgeous option that won't let you down.

7. Great Barrier vs Skin Shade: Which one is right for you?

This is the question I get asked most when it comes to body sun protection, so let me make it simple:

Choose Great Barrier if:

·         You want a lightweight, invisible finish

·         You love a gorgeous scent (vanilla ice cream!)

·         You're heading on holiday or spending long days outdoors

·         You want water-resistant protection for swimming

·         Your skin isn't particularly sensitive

Choose Skin Shade if:

·         You have sensitive, reactive, or eczema-prone skin

·         You prefer fragrance-free products

·         You want 100% mineral protection

·         You've had reactions to chemical sunscreens in the past

·         You want something gentle enough for the whole family

Both are reef-safe, both are available in SPF 30 and 50, and both are vegan, cruelty-free, and made in Britain. You genuinely can't go wrong with either.

8. What about After Sun? Introducing Sun Soothe cooling after sun lotion

Sun protection doesn't stop when you come indoors. What you do after sun exposure matters just as much.

Sun Soothe Cooling Aftersun Lotion (£22, 200ml)

Even with the best SPF routine, your skin needs some TLC after a day in the sun. Sun Soothe is designed to cool, calm, and repair sun-exposed skin, and it's one of those products that feels absolutely heavenly to apply.

What's inside:

·         100% natural ingredients , nothing harsh or synthetic

·         Aloe vera juice and menthol , instant cooling relief

·         Vitamin E , supports skin repair and reduces damage

·         Bisabolol , calms inflammation and soothes irritation

·         Calendula extract , gentle, healing, and anti-inflammatory

·         Fast-absorbing, non-sticky formula , no greasy residue

·         Helps prevent peeling and prolongs your tan

One customer said: "It's the best aftersun I have used. It works instantly on sunburnt skin."

I'd recommend applying Sun Soothe generously after every day in the sun, not just when you've caught too much. Think of it as the final step in your sun care routine: protect, enjoy, repair.

9. Common Sun Care Myths Busted

There are so many myths around sun protection that can leave your skin vulnerable without you even realising. Here are some of the most common ones:

"I only need sunscreen in summer."
UV rays are present all year round. Even on cloudy days, up to 80% of UV rays penetrate cloud cover.

"I can't get burnt in the shade."
UV rays reflect off surfaces like water, sand, and concrete. You can absolutely get UV exposure in the shade.

"A tan means my skin is protected."
A tan is actually a sign of UV damage. Your skin is producing melanin as a defence mechanism, not because it's "safe."

"High SPF means I don't need to reapply."
No matter what SPF you use, you need to reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

"Darker skin doesn't need SPF."
All skin tones are affected by UV damage. While darker skin has more natural melanin, it's still vulnerable to premature ageing and skin cancer.

"My makeup has SPF, so I'm covered."
You'd need to apply an unrealistic amount of makeup to get the SPF stated on the packaging. Always apply a dedicated sunscreen underneath.

10. Sun Safety tips for summer

Here are my top tips for staying safe in the sun this summer:

1.      Apply sunscreen 15-20 minutes before going outside so it has time to absorb

2.      Use enough , two tablespoons for your body, and don't forget ears, feet, and the back of your neck

3.      Re-apply every two hours and immediately after swimming or towelling off

4.      Seek shade during peak hours (10am-4pm) when UV rays are strongest

5.      Wear a hat and protective clothing for extra coverage

6.      Don't forget your lips , they can burn too

7.      Check your skin regularly for any new or changing moles

8.      Use aftersun every evening after sun exposure, even if you haven't burned

9.      Stay hydrated , your skin needs water from the inside too

10.  Choose reef-safe sunscreen , protect the oceans as well as your skin
