Midlife Skincare in Summer:
How to Protect & Hydrate Changing Skin
There is something so beautiful about the warmth of the summer sun on our faces, isn't there?
It invites us to slow down, spend more time outdoors, and enjoy the longer, brighter days. But as we step into our late thirties, forties, and fifties, many of us start to notice that our skin's relationship with the sun begins to change.
The light, breezy sun care routine that worked perfectly in our twenties might suddenly leave our skin feeling dry, tight, or unusually sensitive.
If you have noticed these subtle shifts, please know there is absolutely nothing wrong with your skin.
As we navigate the natural transitions of midlife, our skin goes through its own journey. Personally, I have noticed that my own skin needs a little more tenderness and a lot more hydration during the warmer months than it used to.
Understanding these changes, and learning how to protect and deeply hydrate our changing skin, is a wonderful act of self-care. It allows us to step outside with calm confidence, enjoying the summer sunshine while giving our skin exactly what it needs to stay radiant, strong, and beautifully nourished.

To understand why the sun affects our skin differently now, it helps to look at what is happening beneath the surface.
During midlife, particularly as we experience perimenopause and menopause, our hormone levels begin to fluctuate.
Oestrogen plays a vital role in keeping our skin plump, hydrated, and resilient. When oestrogen levels naturally decrease, it triggers several changes in the structure of our skin.
First, our natural collagen production slows down, which can lead to a loss of elasticity and firmness.
At the same time, our skin's natural cell turnover slows down, meaning it takes longer for fresh new cells to reach the surface. This can sometimes make our complexion look a little dull or tired.
Crucially, our skin also produces fewer natural lipids, which weakens our protective barrier. This lipid barrier is what keeps moisture locked in and environmental irritants out. When it is compromised, we experience increased dryness, a loss of bounce, and a sudden onset of sensitivity. This makes us far more reactive to things like heat, wind, and traditional, chemical-heavy sunscreens.

When we expose our skin to the sun, ultraviolet rays interact with these underlying changes.
While a small amount of sunshine is lovely for our mood and our vitamin D levels, excessive or unprotected exposure can accelerate the natural signs of ageing, a process often referred to as photoageing.
Because midlife skin already has a reduced amount of collagen, UV rays can break down those remaining supportive fibres even faster. This can lead to a more rapid loss of elasticity, making the skin appear thinner and less firm.
Also, the sun can trigger an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its colour. In changing skin, this often manifests as uneven skin tone, sun spots, or hyperpigmentation, which can be tricky to soften once they appear.
Perhaps the most immediate effect we feel in summer is chronic dehydration.
The heat of the sun causes moisture to evaporate from our skin barrier, which is already struggling to retain water. This leaves the skin feeling parched, tight, and occasionally flaky, which can accentuate fine lines and make our complexion look tired.

When it comes to daily sun protection, not all sunscreens are created equal, especially for sensitive or midlife skin.
Many traditional sunscreens use chemical filters, which work by absorbing UV rays into the skin, converting them into heat, and releasing them.
For sensitive, dry, or menopausal skin, this chemical reaction and the resulting heat can easily trigger irritation, redness, or flare-ups of conditions like rosacea and prickly heat.
This is why I am such a passionate advocate for physical, mineral sun care.
Mineral sunscreens use natural ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Instead of absorbing into your skin, these gentle minerals sit softly on the surface, acting like tiny mirrors that physically reflect UVA and UVB rays away from your face and body.
Mineral formulas are incredibly gentle, making them perfect for reactive or delicate skin. They provide immediate broad-spectrum protection from the moment you apply them, without any of the harsh chemicals that can sting your eyes or clog your pores.
It is a simple, ethical, and highly effective way to keep your skin safe while respecting its changing needs.

To keep midlife skin looking radiant and feeling comfortable throughout the summer, protection is only half the battle, we also need to focus heavily on deep hydration.
The best way to achieve this is through a simple technique of flooding the skin with moisture and then sealing it in.
Before you apply your daily mineral SPF, I always recommend applying a high-quality hydrating serum.
A serum rich in multi-molecular weight hyaluronic acid, such as our Rainforest Dew, is ideal. Hyaluronic acid acts like a magnet for moisture, drawing hydration deep into the layers of your skin and instantly plumping up any fine lines caused by dehydration. This step floods your skin with the essential water it craves.
Once you have applied your serum, you can seal all that lovely hydration in with your chosen facial sun care.
By layering your hydration and protection this way, you create a strong, resilient barrier that keeps moisture locked in all day, preventing the drying effects of the summer heat.
This simple routine does not need to feel like a chore, instead, it can be a beautiful, mindful moment of self-care to start your morning.

Caring for your skin in midlife does not require a complicated, ten-step regime.
In fact, keeping things simple, gentle, and consistent is almost always the best approach.
Here is my straight forward morning and evening routine designed to keep your skin protected, hydrated, and glowing all summer long.
Step 1: Gentle Cleanse. Start your morning with a creamy, nourishing cleanser rather than anything that strips the skin. This respects your natural moisture barrier first thing. I use either our Smoothing Cleanser or our Hydrating Cleanser.
Step 2: Hydrating Mist or Toner. Spritz a gentle, alcohol-free toner over your face. This damp surface is the perfect canvas for your next step. It's Morning Mist for me.
Step 3: Flood with Moisture. While your skin is still damp, apply a few drops of a hydrating serum like Rainforest Dew. Press it gently into your skin, letting the hyaluronic acid lock in that vital water.
Step 4: Seal and Protect. Finish with a hydrating moisturiser and a broad-spectrum mineral SPF. Look for a formula that offers high protection while double-hatting as a lightweight daily moisturiser to keep things simple. I use Skin Feast and Sun Day but you could use Skin Shield too.
Step 1: The Double Cleanse. Summer skin accumulates SPF, sweat, and environmental pollutants. Start with an oil-based cleanser to gently melt away the day, followed by your cream cleanser to deeply clean and soothe. In my video I share that I'm a Renewing Cleanser girl through and through. I rarely wear makeup, so I just single cleanse, but if I do wear makeup, then it's Renewing Cleanser (oil based to remove all make up) followed by hydrating cleanser.
Step 2: Hydrate. Spritz your toner again to replenish any moisture lost to the day's heat. It's Morning Mist again for me.
Step 3: Nourish and Restore. Apply your hydrating serum - this can be Youth Potion / Youth Potion Advanced or stick to the Rainforest Dew if your face needs it. Follow it with a nourishing night cream, like Skin Dream or a few drops of a gentle facial oil, like Elixir or Super Greens. Nighttime is when our skin naturally repairs itself, so this is the perfect moment to feed it with vitamin-rich, natural ingredients.

True skincare is never just about what we apply to our faces, it is also about how we care for our whole selves.
During the summer, midlife skin can feel the impact of lifestyle changes, warmer nights, and shifting sleep patterns.
If you find yourself struggling with hot flushes or restless sleep during warm summer nights, your skin will often reflect that fatigue.
Sleep is when our skin goes into repair mode, producing collagen and healing from daily environmental stressors. To support your sleep and your skin, try keeping a cooling, natural mist by your bedside. A gentle spritz of Morning Mist can instantly soothe a hot flush and calm your nervous system. Or why not try Evening Unwind pillow mist to help you drift away.
Additionally, remember to hydrate from within.
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day is essential, but you can also boost your hydration by enjoying water-rich summer foods like cucumber, watermelon, and berries.
These are packed with antioxidants, which help protect your skin from the inside out against free radical damage caused by summer sun exposure.

When I chat with women during my skincare consultations, I often hear the same questions pop up about summer sun care. Here are a few common queries, answered simply:
"Will mineral SPF leave a white, chalky cast on my skin?"
This is a very common worry, as older mineral sunscreens were notorious for this. Thankfully, modern green beauty formulations have come a long way. High-quality mineral sunscreens now use finely dispersed zinc oxide that blends beautifully into the skin, leaving a lovely, natural glow rather than a white mask.
"Can I still use facial oils in the summer, or will they be too heavy?"
You absolutely can, and indeed should, if your skin is feeling dry. While you might want to skip heavy oils during the heat of the day, a lightweight, nutrient-rich facial oil is incredibly beneficial at night. It helps to rebuild the lipid barrier that the summer sun can weaken.
"How do I reapply my sun protection if I am wearing makeup?"
If you are wearing light makeup, look for tinted spf cream like Skin Shade. Alternatively, if you are spending the day outdoors, keeping your makeup minimal (perhaps just a swipe of a nourishing butter tint on your lips and cheeks) makes reapplying your cream mineral SPF much easier and more comfortable.

When our skin is navigating hormonal shifts, keeping things simple, gentle, and consistent is the greatest gift we can give ourselves. By choosing natural skincare and ethical beauty, you are choosing to nourish your skin with ingredients that work in harmony with your body.
It is about moving away from harsh, stripping treatments and moving towards supportive, replenishing care. When you find a simple routine that makes you feel good and actually does what it promises, it brings a wonderful sense of calm confidence. You can step out into the summer world feeling comfortable in your own skin, knowing you are protecting its health and celebrating its natural, understated beauty.
